Biographical Note
Harold Newton Wansborough was born in South Bend, Indiana on June 27, 1893 to William and Mary W. [M]. (Miller) Wansborough; he was the second oldest of four children, including Mabel A., Gertrude and Genevieve. Wansborough began studying music at the age of 10 and by the age of 17 he was a serious student. In 1917 he was working as a multograph operator in a machine shop in Chicago, Illinois and studying music at the Chicago Musical College under Felix Borowski and others. He won First Art Song Prize in the Indiana Song Composers contest in 1921.
He arranged and recorded piano roll music for the United States Music Company, then the Q.R.S. Music Company (its successor), until 1929. He lived in Kokomo, Indiana from at least 1936 to 1942. From 1943 to 1948, he studied music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York under the sponsorship of Dr. Louis E. Bish, a famous psychologist and author. He moved to Harlingen, Texas in 1948 to write and arrange music for Fred Waring. He published nearly 50 works of his own composition. Wansborough died in a car accident Apr. 5, 1954 in Texas and is buried in the Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery in Kokomo.
