Biographical Note
James S. Engle was born on September 13, 1846 to William and [Lutitia][Letitia]{Latitia] (Cabe) Engle in Washington Township, Randolph County, Indiana. He was one of eleven sons, a younger brother of Calvin Stratton Engle. He enlisted in Company F, Indiana 134th Infantry Regiment on May 24, 1864 and was mustered out on September 2, 1864 at Indianapolis, Indiana. He taught school for five years. He studied at Hartsville University, a United Brethren school in Bartholomew County, Indiana for nearly three years, then read law in 1871 and 1872 with various lawyers, until he was admitted to the bar in 1872. He was a justice of the peace from 1874-1878. He married Alice A. Monks on September 23, 1875 in Randolph County. He served in the state Legislature in 1885, as a Representative for Randolph County. He was a lawyer in Winchester, Indiana and served as a Judge of the 25th judicial circuit court, from 1908 until 1914. He was an active Republican and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died on May 2, 1932 and is buried in Fountain Park Cemetery, Winchester, Indiana.
