Biographical Note

George Cary Eggleston was born on November 26, 1839 in Vevay, Indiana to Joseph Cary and Mary Jane (Craig) Eggleston. He was one of four children, including Edward and Joseph. His father died in 1846, and his mother married Williamson Terrell (a Methodist minister) on December 25, 1850. He was able to attend Indiana Asbury (now De Pauw) University for one year before finances required him to begin teaching at the age of sixteen. His brother, Edward Eggleston, also an author, used George Cary's teaching experiences in his book, "The Hoosier Schoolmaster". At the age of seventeen, he inherited a plantation in Virginia and began a life of leisure and aristocratic connections and studied law at Richmond College.

In 1861 he joined Company G of the 1st Virginia Calvary on May 9, serving initially under Col. J.E.B. Stuart. He mustered out on December 9, 1861, transferring to field artillery, then back to Longstreet's artillery. He was in charge of a mortar fort, with his brother Joseph as second in command. He was mustered out on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattax Court House, Virginia.

He worked at a banking and steamboating firm in Illinois after the war and married Marion Craggs on September 9, 1868. He later practiced law in Missouri. They and their child moved to New York City in 1870, where he became a newspaper reporter, then editor, working for the Brooklyn Daily Union, the Hearth and Home (as editor with his brother Edward), the New York Evening Post, Commercial Advertiser and New York World. He was a freelance writer for many periodicals. Their second child was born in 1873.

He wrote many books, basing them on his experiences in Indiana, South Carolina, the Mississippi River and Virginia. His book, "A Rebel's Recollection", published in 1875, is one of the best known memoirs of the Civil War from the Southern perspective.

He died April 14, 1911 and is buried in the Evergreens Cemetery, in Brooklyn, NY.
