Biographical Note

Eliphalet Eggleston was born on March 23, 1774 in New York to John and Mary Eggleston. Having deep roots in New England, he was a descendant of Bygod Eggleston. Bygod had sailed on the William and Mary, part of the "Winthrop Fleet," and landed in Nantasket, Massachusetts on May 30, 1630. He served as an ensign in the militia in Washington County, New York in 1795. He was married to Amy [Anna] [Ama] Cornwall Eddy on August 18, 1796, in Fort Edward, New York. They were a pioneer family of Decatur County, Indiana, moving first to Dearborn County, then purchasing land in Decatur County in 1821. They had thirteen children, eight of whom survived infancy or early death. Eliphalet died on December 9, 1831 and is buried in the Eggleston Cemetery in Washington Township, Decatur County, Indiana. The cemetery has since been farmed over and obliterated.
