Scope and Contents
This collection consists of correspondence and political and business papers from Jesse Kilgour Dubois ranging from 1830 to 1920 pertaining to his work as Illinois Receiver of Public Moneys (1849-1853), his land investments and interests in land drainage (1840s-1850s); the Illinois State Auditor's office and the presidential campaigns of 1860 and 1864; and Abraham Lincoln's life.
There is also a certificate of commission as a major general in 1864 during the U.S. Civil War and copies of his letters and petitions to and from Abraham Lincoln (1856-1861); notes on the Dubois family including Dubois' father, Toussaint Dubois (d. 1816) of Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana; and correspondence of the Huntington family of Springfield, Illinois (1880-1920). Correspondents include J. Butterfield, O.M. Hatch, John Hay, James Shields, Lyman Trumbull, Daniel W. Voorhees, Jesse Weik, and Elisha Whittlesey.

Biographical Note
Jesse Kilgore Dubois was born January 14, 1811 in Lawrence County, Illinois to Toussaint Dubois. He was elected in 1824 to the Illinois House of Representatives, and re-elected to the lower house in 1836, 1838, and 1842. President William Henry Harrison appointed him as Registrar of the Land Office of Palestine, Illinois in 1841. In 1849, Dubois was appointed receiver of Public Moneys of Palestine, but was removed from office upon the election of President Franklin Pierce in 1853. By 1856, Dubois became a prominent member of the Republican Party, and was elected Illinois Auditor of Public Accounts. In 1868 Dubois ran as the Republican candidate for Governor of Illinois, but lost to John M. Palmer. That same year DuBois was named to the Republican National Executive Committee, and served as delegate to the Republican National Convention. A resident of Springfield, Illinois, Dubois was a close neighbor and life-long friend of Abraham Lincoln. Dubois died on November 22, 1876, and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
