He received a Ph.D. in Botany from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1955. He was involved in the creation of the Pine Hills Natural Area (now part of Shades State Park) from 1955-1961. He worked at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, NY from 1955 through 1961. In 1958 he worked briefly at the Southwestern Research Station of the American Museum of Natural History in Portal, Arizona.
He was an assistant professor of Botany at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio from 1961-1963 and also worked at the Kalbfleisch Field Research Station in 1961. Jack became a curator and chairman of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1963. He was also a member of the Nature Conservancy. He authored three books.
He died in Feb. of 1979.
