Biographical Note
Florence J. Martin was born on November 15, 1876 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She trained to be a nurse at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Because of her experience and reputation as a nurse in Indianapolis she was appointed Chief Nurse of Lilly Base Hospital Number 32 in Contrexéville, France during the latter part of World War I. Her duties there ended in 1919. She received the French Medal of Honor in 1918. Upon returning to Indianapolis she took a job at Indianapolis Industrial Clinic where she worked until retirement at the age of eighty-four.
Martin died in 1963 at the age of eighty-six.
