This collection includes correspondence to and from William and Jane Dole in Indiana and Washington, D.C., ranging from 1836 to 1861 regarding family life, business, politics, meeting with President Abraham Lincoln, politics, the appointment of the librarian of Congress, and the U.S. Civil War.

Biographical Note

William Palmer Dole was born in Danville, Vermont, on December 9, 1810. In 1831, he moved to Clinton, Vermillion County, Indiana, and engaged in business. For eight years, Dole serviced in the Senate and House of Representatives in the Indiana legislature. Upon moving to Paris, Illinois, he again engaged in business. Dole was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago where Abraham Lincoln was nominated for president in 1860. He had a summer residence in Berkley Spring, West Virginia. William married three times. His first wife was Susan Rush, daughter of Peter Rush, and they two children had Persis J., a girl, born about 1836, and William R., born about 1838. When Susan died, William married her cousin Jane Bryson. Following Jane’s death, he married Elizabeth Gordon.
