Biographical Note
Clement E. Doane was the proprietor and editor of the Jasper Weekly Courier, which he established in 1858. He served as editor for over 30 years.
Clem Doane was born on November 11, 1832 in Circleville, Ohio to Guy W. and Charlotte (Thrall) Doane. He learned the printer’s trade, and left home at the age of eighteen. In January 1858, he came to Jasper and started the Courier with John Mehringer and Rudolphus Smith. The following year, he assumed complete control of the newspaper.
Doane married twice. His first wife, Rachel Edmonston (d. 1874), whom he married on March 27, 1859, died on March 8, 1874. She gave him six children: Benjamin (1860-1922); Lottie (1864- ); George (1865- ); Walter (1869-1870); Fidelis (1871-1877; and Rachel (born and died 1874). Doane married his second wife, Mary A. Crooks, daughter of Dr. Crooks of Rockport, on December 31, 1874. Mary and Clem had two children: Clement (1877- ) and Archibald (1881-1935).
