Biographical Note

Lucy Morerod Detraz was born in Vevay, Switzerland County, on October 11, 1806 to Jean Daniel Morerod and Antoinette Defour, immigrants from Lausanne, Canton De Vaud, Switzerland. She married Benjamin Detraz in 1827 when she was 21 years old. Her husband later died an accidental death, leaving her a young widow. Detraz had little formal education, spoke French and English, practiced the Protestant faith, and was a vegetarian who lived her entire life in Vevay. She died at age 97 on May 18, 1903.
