Biographical Note

Sylvester Deputy left Wales about 1658 and came to Delaware, where he died about 1700. His descendant, Solomon Deputy and wife Sally had six children, including William Deputy, born on September 5, 1807 in western Virginia, and Joshua, on June 4, 1811 in what is now Jennings County, Indiana. In 1810, the family left Virginia for Indiana and settled in a cabin in Coffee Creek Valley. Solomon Deputy died on July 10, 1816.

On November 15, 1827, William Deputy married and set up housekeeping in a cabin he built. During the U.S. Civil War, he joined the Home Guards, serving as a guard for the Confederate prisoners at Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Indiana.
