Biographical Note
David Andrew Rothrock was born on January 31, 1864 in Milltown, Crawford County, Indiana to Amos and Mary Elizabeth (Burnett) Rothrock. He had two brothers, George W. and John W. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1887 with a B.A. and Indiana University with an A.B. in 1892 and an A.M. in 1893. He attended University of Chicago for post-graduate work in 1894 and 1896 and received a Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in 1898. Rothrock was a professor of mathematics at Indiana University from 1892 to 1937 and Director of Admissions from 1937 to1938, before he finally retired. Rothrock authored many mathematics textbooks and was a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Indiana Academy of Science.
Rothrock was also a city engineer for Bloomington, Indiana from 1902 to 1904 and served on the Bloomington City Council from 1918 to 1926. He also represented Brown and Monroe counties in the Indiana General Assembly House in 1919.
He married Helena Grace Shirley on September 12, 1905 in Martin County, Indiana, and they had four children: Henry Shirley, Mary Emily, David Andrew and Philip Wayne. Rothrock died September 2, 1949 in Lafayette, Indiana and was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, alongside his wife, who died in 1948.
