Biographical Note

James P. Deal was born in Jennings County, Indiana, and enlisted as a private in Company H, 26th Indiana Regiment on August 1, 1861. He had a light complexion, dark eyes, brown hair, and was five feet, five inches high. At the time of his enrollment, Deal was a farmer. When he was discharged on September 21, 1864, he was eighteen years old. His widow, Celestine Deal, applied for a widow's pension, which was approved on June 13, 1890.
