Biographical Note
Rear Admiral Benjamin Franklin Day was born on January 16, 1841, in Plymouth, Ohio, to Benjamin Franklin Day and Prussia King. He was appointed to the Naval Academy from Ohio in 1858. During the U.S. Civil War, he served in the U.S.S. Harriet Lane and in the Colorado in the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron. In July 1863, Day was wounded in a night engagement. He retired from active naval duty on March 28, 1900, after more than forty years of service.
Day married Flora Inez Baldwin (1846-1888) and they had two sons, Phillip B. and Benjamin Clarke (1877-1954). After the death of his first wife, he married Julia B. Wentz (1842-1920) on May 9, 1892. In 1900, they lived in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County, Virginia. His son, Phillip B. Day had three children with his wife Ernestina: Phillip B., Jr., Fora P., and Jane.
Benjamin Franklin Day died on July 3, 1933, at the home of his son Phillip in Buena Vista, Virginia.
