Biographical Note
In Virginia, Ephraim Daugherty was born on September 1, 1809. He lived in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana, having purchased property there in 1852. His wife was Margaret Elizabeth Weldon (1839-1933). They had at least three girls: Mary (born in 1874), Effie M. (1876-1930), and Laura (born in 1881). Ephraim died on August 27, 1900 at the age of 90, and is buried in Athens, Fulton County, Indiana.
In his letter, he mentions the children of John Daugherty, who were: Nathan (born 1833), Andrew (born 1836), Daniel/Thomas (born 1839), Susanna/Susan and Nancy (both born in 1842), Mary (born in 1843), William (who must have died between 1852 and 1860), Charlotte (born in 1851), and John (born in 1852). This list is made from Ephraim’s letter and the 1860 census for Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana, in which the parents are listed as John (born 1805) and Sarah (born 1812). The letter lists Daniel between Andrew and Susanah, but the federal census lists him as Thomas.
