Biographical Note

Calvin J. Coppock was born in Ohio in 1827 to James and Jane Coppock, who were Quakers, and was one of ten children. He married his first wife, Mary Ann, in Ohio in 1851, and they had seven children, including a son Elmer, who suffered from infantile paralysis. Calvin enlisted as a private in Company C, 89th Regiment Indiana Infantry on August 8, 1862, in Jonesboro, Indiana. He was promoted to corporal in December of 1862. He was discharged July 19, 1865 in Mobile, Alabama, suffering from chronic diarrhea, which developed during the war and never fully recovered from that ailment. He also became partially deaf, due to a shell explosion during the war. He applied for, and received, disability pay thereafter. He worked as a farmer and carpenter, intermittently. Mary Ann died November 8, 1868 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana. He married his second wife, Elizabeth Anderson, in Grant County, Indiana, August 11, 1870, with whom he had three children. Elizabeth died in 1893 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana. Calvin died on September 11, 1898 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Gas City, Indiana.
