Biographical Note

Townsend Cope was born July 9, 1839 in Faysth, Pennsylvania to Evan and Harriet Cope, who were Quakers, as was Townsend. He was one of five children, and his family lived in Butler, Ohio in 1850. He married Mary S. Cobbs, born in 1840, when she was 26, in Jennings County, Indiana. She died in 1884 and is buried in Jennings County, Indiana. He then married Lydia Carter, in Hendricks County, Indiana, on March 28, 1886, and they had two children. He worked as a farmer, in dry goods and as an agent for a nursery. He died on July 18, 1928 and is buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield, Indiana.
