The collection contains photocopies of letters between the Hendren and Combs families in Indiana to relatives in North Carolina. They contain information about farming in Indiana and various family members. Two of the three letters are to Jabez and Nancy Hendren.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth Combs and Jehu Hendren, both born about 1799, married on January 9, 1833 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and they had one son, William Hicks, born about 1835. They moved to Rush County, Indiana, before 1835. Jehu Hendren’s parents were William Hendren II and Charlotte Ellis.

William and Asenath Combs moved to Indiana around 1835. They married on January 8, 1822 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and they had eight children: Joel, Jabez, Adoniram, Nancy, Martha, Mary, Eli, and William. William Combs was born around 1802 to Thomas Hicks and Keziah Hayes Combs. Asenath Ellis was born on August 8, 1802, to William and Ann Ellis.

Jabez Hendren married Nancy Combs on March 3, 1829 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Jabez is the brother of Jehu Hendren, while Nancy Combs is the sister of William Combs.
