Scope and Contents

This collection contains two photocopies of letters. The first is from Horace Conine to his sone Benton, who was serving in his stead during the Civil War. The letter largely speaks of activity on the family farm and the desire for his son to return. Benton's younger brother appends a short note to the end of the letter.

The second letter is from Emily Baker, niece of Horace, to Nellie Husted, daughter of Myron Conine. The letter speaks of baby items sent along with the letter and the return of a pair of shoes.

Biographical Note

Horace Conine was a farmer and resident of DeKalb County, Indiana during the Civil War. He was drafted to serve, but as he had a family to care for and he hired his son, Benton to serve in his stead.

Emily Baker was the niece of Horace Conine and was married to an East Coast railroad magnate.
