Biographical Note
Esther U. McNitt was born March 2, 1887 to James C. and Mary E. McNitt. She was a head librarian in the Division of Indiana History and Archives at the Indiana State Library during the 1920s and 1930s and served on the Indiana Historical Commission (1923-1925). McNitt died on October 1, 1941.
Louis J. Bailey (1881-1962) served as the Indiana State Librarian from 1925 to 1935. Bailey served as a consultant in the establishment of the United States National Archives building in Washington, D.C. In 1933, Bailey was granted lifetime membership in the Indiana Library Association (now Indiana Library Federation) and the American Library Association. Beginning in 1929, he served for a time as the president of the National Association of State Libraries.
