Scope and Contents

This collection includes five copies of hand-written letters. The oldest is dated August 15, 1840. Three were written in 1847. One has no year, although August 28 and 29 are on the letter. The letters are addressed to Nathan D. Coffin in Greenfield, Hancock County, Indiana, in 1840, and in Charlotteville, also Hancock County, in 1847. The letters are written by Alfred and Lydia Wheeler in Guilford County, North Carolina, where Nathan was born. The greeting is "Respected brother and sister." The letters give family news.

Biographical Note

Nathan Dix Coffin was born on November 16, 1818, to Zacharias and Phebe (Starbuck) Coffin in Guilford County, North Carolina. He married Mary, who was born in 1818 or 1819. Their children with approximate years of birth were: John F. (1839); Oliver S. (1841); Anderson (1844); Elmina or Elinora (1846); Emily (1849); Clementine (1852); Orlando (1858); and Eldora (1862). Nathan and Mary lived at Blue River, Hancock County, Indiana, when the federal census was taken in 1850, 1860, and 1870. He died on September 13, 1908 in Hancock County.
