The address of President Cleveland is given as: 12 West 51st Street, New York City. The letter reads: "Albert Thayer, Esq., Indianapolis, Ind. My dear sir: I have never made it a practice to attempt to stay the tide of abuse and misrepresentation which has been started for partizan [sic] purposes regarding my relations to the war of the Rebellion. I have no objections, however, to saying to you that it is true that two of my brothers enlisted and served during the war, and that I did remain at home as the support of my widowed mother and sisters, sending a substitute in my place. Very truly yours, Grover Cleveland."

Historical Note

Hilton U. Brown induced Albert Thayer to donate this letter, which was written by Grover Cleveland, to the State Library. The letter defends Mr. Cleveland's decision to remain out of the Civil War by paying for a substitute. At the time, Grover had a widowed mother and sisters to support. Hilton Brown, using The Indianapolis News letterhead, wrote to Mr. Demarchus Brown at the State Library in Indianapolis and explained the reason for the letter. Hilton wrote: "It was written in 1892, at the time that Mr. Cleveland had been charged with shirking his duty as a soldier. Mr. Thayer wrote to Mr. Cleveland asking for a statement of facts and received the letter which I enclose. It seems to me to have historic value..."
