Biographical Note
William Merritt Chase was born November 1, 1849, in Williamsburg (now Ninaveh), Indiana. His parents were David and Sarah (Swaim) Chase. Chase studied art in Indianapolis, New York City, St. Louis, and in several European countries. He became known for his Impressionist portraits and landscapes, working in both oil paints and pastels. In 1886, Chase married Alice Gerson, with whom he had eight children. Chase died in 1916 in New York City.
