Biographical Note

Smiley Newton Chambers was born on March 18, 1845, in Edwardsport, Knox County, Indiana. His parents were Alexander and Rachel (Keith) Chambers. He served in the 115th Indiana Volunteer Regiment during the U.S. Civil War (1863-1865). After the Civil War, Chambers entered Shurtleff College (Upper Alton, Illinois) and was graduated in June 1870. He began practicing law in Vincennes, Indiana in 1872. On May 13, 1876, he married Isadora McCord with whom he had six children. Chambers was appointed U.S. District Attorney for the District of Indiana by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889. He held this office until 1893, when he started a law practice in Indianapolis, Indiana with S. O. Pickens and C. W. Moores. He died on February 8, 1907.
