Scope and Contents
This collection contains photostat copies of two letters sent to Elisha Chamberlain of Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana. The first letter was written September 8, 1862 by Augustine Elliott and sent from Helena, Arkansas while he served in 24th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The second letter was written April 16, 1865 by John Smith Ruberson, a former resident of Washington County, and sent from Springfield, Illinois.

Biographical Note
Elisha Chamberlain was born April 19, 1827 in Washington County, Indiana to Asahel and Sarah (Elliott) Chamberlain. He married Rachel J. Reed on June 22, 1848 and they had six children. He served July 9-17, 1863 in Company C, 112th Indiana Infantry as one of the "Minute Men" who defended Southern Indiana against Morgan's Raid. A farmer and lifelong resident of Washington County, Chamberlain died on March 31, 1888.
