Biographical Note

Lewis King was born around 1845 or 1846. He was the youngest of six children. King was orphaned at the age of two and was bound out, at the age of five, to a couple for more than 10 years. They treated him abusively and did not allow him to attend the two years of school for which they had contracted, only three weeks. As had Abraham Lincoln, he learned, by candle and fire light, reading, writing and arithmetic.

King enlisted in the Union Army, in part to counter the South's treatment of slaves because he had experienced slavery first hand, as a private in Company H, 27th Indiana Infantry Regiment on September 12, 1861. He met Louisa M. Alcott when she nursed him through sickness and was mustered out on September 1, 1864 in Indianapolis, Indiana. King later enlisted in Company G, 145th Indiana Infantry as a private and was mustered out as a corporal.

King married Caroline Deputy in Jennings County, Indiana on September 30, 1866. She was born in 1845 and died in 1911. They lived in Bartholomew County, Indiana where he worked as a teacher in 1880 and a minister in 1900. King and Flora were married by 1920. He served as a department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, Indiana. King filed as an invalid August 30, 1887 and died July 30, 1929. He is buried in the Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus, Indiana.
