Biographical Note

Ethel N. Arnold was born to Francis A. and Elizabeth N. Arnold on Feb. 29, 1876, in Greencastle, Indiana, where her father was publisher of the Democrat newspaper. She was the oldest of four children, including Frances A., Edna A. and Dorothy. She was graduated from DePauw University with a Ph. D. in 1897. She married Francis "Frank" Calvin Tilden on Sept. 13, 1900 in Putnam County, Indiana, and they had four children; Francis A. (Allen), Elizabeth and Arnold. Her husband was a professor at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana.

She taught school from 1897 to 1900 and wrote poetry and stories. "Quest and acceptance, and other poems" was published in 1925. She was the first poet laureate of the Indiana Federation of Clubs in 1932. Ethel wrote the lyrics to the oratorio "The Evangel of the New World", performed in 1935 in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Methodism by John Wesley. Ethel and Frank moved to Chicago after his retirement from DePauw. She died on Oct. 31, 1950 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, Indiana.
