Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one blank book, measuring 7 ½” wide and 12 ¼” high, and having 122 pages, many of which are blank. The first numbered page is 13. Expense accountings fill most of the written pages. Pages 65, 66, and 67 record family births and deaths.

Biographical Note

George Capehart was born July 18, 1808 in North Carolina. He married Elizabeth, who was born April 30, 1810 or 1820. Their children were: Mary E. born November 10, 1843; W. D. born June 2, 1845; Bascom born June 21, 1852; Elwood born January 5, 1855; Sarah born February 24, 1859; and Ahren F. born October 20, 1866.

The 1860 federal census lists George (age 50) and Elizabeth (age 40) in Jefferson, Pike County, with: Adaline White (age 15); Bascom White (age 8); Morris E. White (age 5); and Sarah F, White (age 1).

George (age 63) and Elizabeth (age 60) were listed in the 1870 federal census at Jefferson, Pike County, Indiana, with Bankin [Bascom] (age 17); Elwood (age 15); Ida [Sarah] (age 11); and Alvin T. [Ahren] (age 3). Bascom died on February 13, 1872 at the age of 19, and is buried in Algiers, Pike County, Indiana.

In the hand-written family history on pages 65-67 of the Day Book, Ahrens F. Wright is recorded as born July 23, 1819. Directly below, Simelder White is listed as the daughter of A. F. White [not spelled: Wright] and Elizabeth. Simelder was born May 8, 1840. Elwood Capehart married Jemima A. Kelso on April 2, 1882 in Pike County. In 1880, Elwood was living with farmer McCullis Gray’s family in Jefferson, Pike County. In 1910,

Elwood (age 55) and Jemima (age 50) had Emmit H. (age 23) and Vonnie (age 20) in their house in Jefferson. Elwood and Jemima were recorded in the 1930 census.
