Biographical Note

John Collett was born in 1818 to Stephen Stevenson Collett in Vermillion County, Indiana. He graduated from Wabash College in 1847, where he also received an honorary Doctor of Philosophy for his geological research in 1877. Collett was appointed as the State Geologist of Indiana in 1879, producing the first geological map of Indiana ever published in 1883. He died of pneumonia on March 15, 1899 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was buried in Terre Haute.
