This collection includes a typed copy of a letter from Jesse C. Burch in an hospital in Evansville, Indiana on 1862/09/05 regarding family matters and the war. There is also a typed copy and a photocopy of an autographed, signed letter from Stephen M. Burch near Raleigh, North Carolina on 1865/04/22 regarding family matters, the war, and Lincoln's assassination.

Biographical Note

Stephen M. Burch's mother was Sarah, and he had at least two siblings, including Jennie and Tom. He and Jesse C. may have been brothers. He married Mary E. Newkirk on October 27, 1859. He served as a Union soldier in Company D, 59th Indiana Infantry Regiment, first as a private, then as a first lieutenant, mustering out on July 17, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. No further information was available.

He served as a Union soldier in Company D, 59th Indiana Infantry Regiment, as a private. No further information was available.
