Biographical Note

William A. Bruce was born to William and Polly (Lucas) Percifull Bruce, on August 6, 1776, near Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He had four siblings. They moved to Kentucky in 1784. He married Sally Polk on October 23, 1798, and they and their four children moved to Vincennes, Indiana in 1805. They built a cabin on what is now Bruceville in the fall of 1805. He led some militia in the Battle of Tippecanoe on November 7, 1811 and became known as Major Bruce. Sally died in 1818, after giving birth to their fifteenth child. He married Hetty Holmes in 1819, with whom he had ten children. He died April 12, 1854 and is buried in Knox County, Indiana.
