This collection includes an original, autographed, signed letter from Charles R. Brown in Indiana in January 1963 regarding the seal of the secretary of state of Indiana and photocopies of autographed, signed legal documents and letters from people in Washington, D.C., Montezuma, Indiana and elsewhere ranging from 1847 to 1862 regarding legal matters and life in the army during the Civil War.

Biographical Note

Charles R. Brown was born on July 26, 1914 to Clyde and Mary Beatrice Atkinson Brown in Oolitic, Indiana. He married Mildred Elizabeth Voyles on August 21, 1937 in Danville, Indiana, with whom he had one son. He worked in the family mortuary in Montezuma, Indiana and became the owner. He was a former Indiana State Senate secretary and veteran employee of the Indiana Legislative Reference Bureau. He died in Clinton, Indiana on May 28, 1993 and is buried in Montezuma, Indiana.
