This is a manuscript written by Lealie Samantha Hulen Reeve in 1938 telling about her early life. This 14-page typed manuscript gives her childhood memories until her father died and she went to live with her aunt, who was not very kind to her.
Lealie Samantha Hulen Reeve wrote this story of her childhood at the request of her children. Her father came from Davies County and married three four, first to Eliza Jane Keith, second to Elizabeth Patton, and third to Lealie's mother. In 1888, Lealie married Samual Reeve and had six children. Beginning on page three, Lealie tells her memories of being the youngest of the family and "somewhat petted and spoiled." Her father farmed and raised cattle, hogs, and sheep. The family had "plenty of everything." They "always had lots of company, both invited and uninvited." Her father was an elder in the Christian Church, and her mother taught a class of young ladies. Lealie's mother died of typhoid when she was six. Lealie wrote about a memorable day when Sallie Trimble hit her and Lealie's father ordered the woman out of his house. Her father married for the fourth time to Mrs. Sayers, but on their first night together, Lealie insisted on sharing her father's bed as she had been doing. On page 11, Lealie tells about the traumatic experience. She wrote that her new step-mother was "a rather narrow person." Two years after her mother's death, Lealie's father died of pneumonia. A public auction was held, and Lealie tried to keep her favorite rocking chair from being sold. Finally, she was able to buy it herself. On page 14, she wrote: "After the sale we children were farmed out." Lealie and her brother Will went to Aunt Sallie. She concluded her narrative thus: "Although I received harsh treatment, my spirit was never daunted, and I have always carried in my heart a very tender feeling for children and their difficulties. I would never mistreat a chld for they have an exceedingly keen sense of injustice and never forget."

Biographical Note
Lealie Samantha Hulen Reeve was born on January 13, 1871 to Simpson Hulen and his third wife, in Edwardsport, Knox County, Indiana. Her mother died about 1877, and her father about 1879, after which she was raised by her Aunt Sallie Hulen. Lealie married Samuel Maurice Reeve, and had six children: Helen, Roscoe, Bryce, Margaret, Virgil, and Gordon. She died on January 27, 1939, and is buried in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery in Edwardsport.
