This collection includes newspaper clippings from the diary of Lewis Brooks in Martin County, Indiana, his writings about his father, Thomas Jefferson Brooks and an account of a trip by his cousin William B. Trask, ranging from 1845 to 1854 regarding travel over land and via the river.

Biographical Note

Lewis Brooks was born to Thomas Jefferson and Susan Brooks on October 30, 1835 in Indiana. He was one of eight children. He married Amanda M. Crook on June 19, 1856 in Martin County, Indiana, with whom he had ten children. He enlisted on May 23, 1861 in the Indiana 14th Regiment, Company C, later served as a colonel in the 80th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War, and was mustered out on August 9, 1863. He died on March 18, 1913 and is buried in the Brooks Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Indiana.
