Biographical Note
Frederick Heath Bowman, Jr. was born on August 7, 1910, in Muncie, Indiana to Frederick Heath and Florence O'Harra Bowman. He received an A.B. from Princeton in 1931 and married Jennifer MacDonald on May 22, 1937. He was a writer, including advertising, from 1931-1942. In 1942 he was employed by the U.S. Dept. of State and served in various capacities until his retirement in 1969, including deputy and public affairs officer in Paris, Rome, Belgrade. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 and married Mercedes Bucher in 1965. They moved to Rome, where he wrote, often using his own photography to illustrate. He died on January 17, 1993 in Rome.
