Biographical Note
Sarah Young was the niece of Brigham Young, of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints. She was born on February 21, 1828. She married James Bovard in Ohio and they settled in Alpha, Indiana. They had twelve children, six of whom became Methodist ministers and served mainly in California. These sons were Marion McKinley (president of the University of Southern California), Freeman D. (vice president of the University of Southern California and editor of the California Christian Advocate), George Finley,(president of Southern California and leader of Grace Church, a leading church in Los Angeles), William Sherman (vice president of the University of Chattanooga), Charles Lincoln (Superintendent of the English speaking work of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New Mexico), and Melville Young (a missionary to Africa). She died on October 31, 1888 and is buried in Austin, Indiana.
