This collection includes photocopies of enlistment papers, military communiqués and letters from Robert F. Braden in Indiana and Missouri, ranging from 1853 to 1868, regarding life in the Indiana militia and U.S. army during the U.S. Civil War, family matters, and military life. There are also photocopies of transcribed letters published in the August 1864 issue of the Indiana History Bulletin.

Biographical Note
Robert Floyd Braden was born on September 21, 1835 to Burr (1802-1861) and Mary Dulin (Jenners) Braden (1807-1863) at Jefferson, Clinton County, Indiana. He had four brothers and three sisters. Braden was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Indiana militia on December 7, 1853. He worked as a merchant until 1861. When the U.S. Civil War broke out, Braden was commissioned as a first lieutenant in Company G, 26th Indiana Regiment on July 27, 1861. On February 6, 1863, he was promoted to captain and transferred to Company B. Braden was discharged on June 2, 1865. Braden died on October 12, 1877 in Lafayette, Indiana and was buried in Spring Vale Cemetery in Lafayette.
