Biographical Note

The Rev. Joseph W. Blythe was born in 1808 in Kentucky. He served the 2nd Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1833-1836 and subsequently to Cranberry, New Jersey. He then moved to Vincennes, Indiana to fill the pulpit of the first Presbyterian Church in April of 1856, which position he held until May 1, 1858. He then became the financial officer at Hanover College in Hanover Indiana, after which he joined the army in 1862 as a chaplain and remained at the hospital in Madison, Indiana until the end of the war, where he continued until his death in 1876. He and his wife Elizabeth had many children.
