Biographical Note

James Blake was born on March 3, 1791 in Pennsylvania. He moved to Indianapolis in 1821, where be became a businessman (1821-1870). He operated a ginseng company (1826-1828), was an officer of the Steam Mill Company in 1828, president of the Indiana Mutual Fire Insurance Company (1827-1855), a member of the board of directors of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad and a director of the Lafayette and Indianapolis Railroad. He was president of the Indianapolis Benevolent Society for 35 years, and served as a trustee for Hanover College, Miami University, Ohio, and Crown Hill Cemetery. He died on November 26, 1870 and is buried in Indianapolis, Indiana.
