Scope and Contents

The collection includes account books for the Hiss funeral, furniture, and agricultural implement businesses (1858-1904). The collection also includes letter books of Sebastian and William Hiss, containing business correspondence (1883-1899), register of funerals (1892-1902), register of invoices (1897-1899), and loose bills, receipts, and school report cards.

Biographical Note

William H. Hiss, born in 1868, was a graduate of DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, in 1894. Hiss became a teacher at Central Academy in Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana (1891-1892). Later, Hiss became Plainfield funeral director and dealer in furniture and agricultural implements (1894-1904), and also served as secretary and president of the Indiana Funeral Directors' Association (1903-1904). William H. Hiss died October 2, 1907, and is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield, Indiana.
