Biographical Note

Richard Edgar Bishop was born Oct. 9, 1892 in Walton, Indiana to George and Vora Bishop. He attended Wabash College, received a B.S. degree from Purdue University in 1914 and a B.S. in architecture from the University of Illinois in 1922. He was employed as a teacher in Walton briefly, after graduating from Purdue, then worked in Indianapolis after received his architecture degree. He married Ruth A. Trueblood May 5, 1917, in Grant County, Indiana, and they had three children; Ann, Richard and Mary. He served in World War I as a lieutenant. He was a principal in the firm of Bishop, Knowlton & Carson from 1924-1934, during which time he designed many buildings for the Indiana state park system. From 1934-1939, he served in the National Park Service, Indiana regional office, as the State Supervisor of Park and Recreation Planning. He was in private practice again for three years, then served as Planning Director for the Indiana Department of Conservation, from 1942 to 1946, planning master plans for existing and proposed state parks, then returned to private practice until his retirement in 1971 and was again involved in planning buildings for Indiana State Parks and government facilities, including children's camps around Indiana. He also served as general planner for the Indianapolis Home Show from 1949-1952. He died In October 1973 at the Broad Ripple Nursing Home in Indianapolis, Indiana and is buried in Walton, Indiana.
