Biographical Note

Thomas Hart Benton was born March 14, 1782 at Harts Mill near Hillsborough, North Carolina. Benton attended Chapel Hill College (University of North Carolina). In 1806, he was admitted to the bar at Nashville, TN. Benton served as aide de camp to General Andrew Jackson and became the colonel of a regiment of Tennessee Volunteers from 1812-1813. He moved to St. Louis in the new Missouri Territory where he became the editor of the Missouri Inquirer and continued to practice law. After Missouri became a state he was elected Senator in 1821 and served five terms in office. In 1856, he was defeated in a run for Governor of Missouri. He spent the rest of his life engaged in literary pursuits. He died April 10, 1858. Thomas Benton was interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery, in St. Louis, Mo.
