Scope and Contents
The collection contains photocopied letters written by Calvin Benjamin to his brother Isaac. The letters describe his work in the Coast Survey service at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, his later joining up with General Zachary Taylor’s forces in Texas, crossing the Rio Grande and the battles of Matamoras and Monterey. He also describes the morale of the troops and some troop movements. Also contains a written copy of a presentation given by a relative describing him and his service.

Biographical Note
Calvin Benjamin, Shelby County, Indiana, graduated from West Point in 1842. Following graduation, he was commissioned into the United States Army as a second Lieutenant. He was assigned to the “Coast Survey Service in 1844 where he remained until 1845 when the Chesapeake Bay was completely charted. He was sent down to Texas in September 1845 joining a large group of Army regulars on the Texas-Mexico border. Lt. Benjamin fought in the Battles of Matamoras as part of the Fourth Artillery Regiment. He also fought in the Battle of Monterey in September 1846. On September 13, 1847, Lt. Benjamin was killed at Chapultepec at the gate of Mexico City.
