The collection contains a copy of the diary of John K. Benefiel, of the 46th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. The diary discussed camp life and its hardships, the weather, troop movements, the re-election of Abraham Lincoln as reflected in the vote among the regiments. Regiments from Louisiana, Maine, Iowa, Ohio, New York, and Indiana are mentioned. The diary features an index in the back with Military units, boats, persons, and places.

Biographical Note

John K. Benefiel was a married landowner from Pulaski County, Indiana. During the Civil War, he mustered in to either the 40th or 46th Infantry regiment, Company H. He died in 1865.
