Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a letter from Mr. Beckwith to Mr. Lafayette Speights, stating that Mr. Beckwith is a candidate for the office of State Representative on the Republican ticket, asking Mr. Speights to support his candidacy by obtaining the signatures of friends on the petition, necessary for him to be placed on the ballet. The petition shows the signatures of Alberta Young, Lafayette Speights, and Lillian Arnold, all residing on W. 25th St., in Indianapolis, IN.

Biographical Note

Frank Roscoe Beckwith was born Dec. 11, 1904 in Indianapolis, IN. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1921. He was tutored in the study of law by attorneys Asa J. Smith and Sumner A. Clancy. He published the Indianapolis Tribune for a short time. He was the welfare director for the Indiana Industrial Board from 1929 to 1933. He was active in the Republican party in Indiana for many years, from 1928 on. He ran unsuccessfully for the state legislature and Indianapolis City Council several times. He served as public defender in Marion Criminal Court, Division II from 1951-1958 and a member of the Indiana Commission on Aging and the Aged from 1957-1961. He became the first Negro in the history of the United States to run for president when he was on the presidential ticket with Richard M. Nixon in the 1960 Indiana Republican primary. He was a member of many organizations, including the NAACP and the Bar of the United States Supreme Court. He died Aug. 24, 1965 in Indianapolis, IN.
