Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a letter from William H. H. Beadle, Surveyor General, Yankton, Dakota Territory, to Vice President Schuyler Colfax of Indiana, suggesting his brother, John H. Beadle, as a witness for Congress regarding his study of Mormonism in Utah. John H. Beadle, a journalist, gathered material for a book, tentatively entitled, according to the letter, The American Saints and Their Territory. He did publish at least 3 books specifically concerning Mormons.

Biographical Note

William Henry Harrison Beadle was born Jan. 1, 1838 in Parke County, Indiana. He was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1861, with a specialization in civil engineering. He served in the Civil War, both in Indiana and Michigan units and was discharged with the rank of brevet brigadier-general. He received his LL.B. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1867 and practiced law in Evansville, IN and Boscobel, WI. He was appointed in March 1869, as Surveyor General of the Dakota Territory and was appointed Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1879. He served as president of the Madison State Normal School from 1889 to 1906 and served as professor of history until he retired in 1912. He died Nov. 13, 1915, while visiting his daughter in San Francisco, CA. There is a statue of him in the United States Capitol building Rotunda in Washington, D.C., with the inscription, “He Saved the School Lands”. He is buried in Albion, MI.
