The collection consists of a handwritten ledger of patients’ names and amounts owed, beginning date April 2, 1883 at Broad Ripple, Indiana, with entries ending Oct. 31, 1885. There are various newspaper clippings and other papers inserted between pages, including a gas bill for J. A. Bates, dated July 1, 1890.

Biographical Note
Joseph W. Bates, a physician, was born in 1858. He attended the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati and was graduated in 1883. He died on May 3, 1909 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
