Biographical Note
George Grey Barnard was born May 24, 1863 in Bellefonte, PA. His father, the Rev, J.L. Barnard, was the minister for 30 years at the Second Presbyterian Church in Madison, IN. George Barnard was a sculptor for 30 years and was commissioned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to create 31 figures for the new capitol building at Harrisburg. Barnard is best known work is of Abraham Lincoln, with 3 castings, in Cincinnati, OH (1917), Manchester, England (1919), and Louisville, KY (1922). He collected Gothic-Romanesque art housed in a building of his design in New York City, which became the nucleus of the 12th-15th century antique collection of The Cloisters, "Cloister of St. Guilhem", the Medieval Art Branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1925. He was a noted Indiana sculptor and was posthumously named to the Indiana Academy. He died on April 24, 1938, one month before The Cloisters opened.
