Biographical Note

Joseph Ballard was a physician originally from Massachusetts. While in Indiana, Ballard lived in Door Village of Scipio Township in La Porte County. Door Village was named after the English translation of the county name la porte, which means “door.” The village was founded in 1836, shortly before Ballard’s letters were written.
