Biographical Note

Daniel Bailiff was born circa 1826 in Ohio but relocated with his family to Indiana when he was twelve. In 1850 he married Harriet Young, who was born in Indiana in 1831. Bailiff served in the 27th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War, enlisting September 12, 1861 as a private in Jennings County. Bailiff’s regiment, and presumably Bailiff himself, was involved in several important battles of the Civil War including Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Bailiff was injured during the war and spent a good deal of time in the military hospital; he was discharged as a private in September of 1864 and honored with distinguished service. He lived out the remainder of his life as a farmer in Warren and Washington Townships in Marion County, Indiana. He died January 16, 1895 at the age of sixty-nine, and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
